A little about Deyva
For over 30 years I have been mostly a photographer, writer, social worker and caretaker. My projects vary from interactive community sculptures to images of Egypt, and collages of mental illness. I try to show beauty in the overlooked and stories in the everyday. In 2024 and 2025, I received two state arts grants to do a project of a lifetime combining my art with my activism. The Street Peace Project includes an exhibition of photographs of street memorials and the Beacon, an interactive sculpture collecting messages of peace from the community. Also, I have created children’s books: Julian’s Dream Friend, The Sheep Cloud, Poochie and the All-Star Dog Show, and Serena the Can-Do Kid. I have received numerous awards for my photography, poetry and other writing. For many years I was managing editor for Green Pages, the newspaper of the Green Party. Also, I have been a freelance journalist and photographer covering issues for local newspapers and wire services. In media, I worked as a video editor, film researcher and handled communications for the regional NAACP. I was director of a non-for- profit organization, organizer for residents in low-income housing and an environmental legal researcher. I worked as a counselor and advocate for refugees, the mentally ill, and the homeless. My work history also includes, secretarial, construction work, cleaning and sheep farming. Most importantly, I care for a lovely family in Troy, New York.
